Edexcel International GCSE in English as a Second Language qualification

The International GCSE in English as a Second Language or simply the IGCSE in ESL is as the name implies a course designed for student whose first language is not English hence the course is ONLY for international student from outside the UK who is first language is not English and she/he is not an English native speaker. Students from the UK should not enrol in this course.
This qualification is designed by Pearson-Edexcel for either students obtaining their secondary education through English as a medium of instruction or studying English in order to enhance their future educational prospects or employment prospects. The achievement of this qualification is recognised by the vast majority of the British universities and recognised by the European and in most of cases can substitute English requirements by universities since Pearson-Edexcel benchmarked it with the CEFR system for recognising English ability in Europe from level B1 (intermediate) to C1 (advanced) based on how much marks you achieve.
It is unlike most of the English language courses, studying IGCSE in ESL focuses on learning the standard spoken language rather than only on grammar. The spoken language you will learn focuses on both unfamiliar and familiar topics normally encountered in personal, social, academic or vocational contexts to enable you to write clear, well-structured texts using an appropriate style, highlighting relevant important issues, expanding and supporting points of view with supporting arguments where relevant and showing controlled use of organisational patterns. You'll learn about how to express yourself fluently, spontaneously and appropriately in a range of speaking contexts.  Through writing, students will learn how to articulate their own experience; express thoughts, feelings and imagined ideas clearly; order and present facts, ideas and opinions; understand and use vocabulary; use grammatical structures, paragraphs, sentences, punctuation and spelling accurately and effectively. The syllabus also promotes students’ personal development and helps them explore broader areas of human concern. You will see your skills and knowledge improving week by week.

Once you have completed your course, you will have prepared yourself to attend an external formal exam in either of the British Council or one of the Pearson-Edexcel approved examination centers in your country of residence.

 

Accreditation and Course Code

The course prepares you to sit for Pearson-Edexcel examination in the IGCSE in English as a Second Language in any Pearson-Edexcel approved examination center in the UK, or if you are an overseas student then you can either sit for the formal exam of this course in any of Pearson-Edexcel approved exam centers in your country of residence or with the nearest British Council branch to you. Entry Requirements

Academic requirements: You don't need any previous qualifications to enrol in any of our IGCSE courses, but you will only need some basic maths for this course. For student who needs some mathematics push or brush up, we have designed for them a mathematics preparation short course to study before starting their IGCSE course, that shall help in filling up any lack or gap in maths basics skills. The course is most suitable to applicants who has studied to a school level equivalent to or higher than grade 8 or any other equivalent qualification.

English language requirement: If your first language is English then you may skip this section.  
If your first language is Not English and you wish to enrol in our IGCSE courses then you are required to take our free online English proficiency test (EPT) in order to assess if you can join our IGCSE courses immediately or would require to take some English language courses for preparation first. Upon finishing your EPT test you will immediate have a feedback on your English language skills and which level it is equivalent to, just follow the on-screen instructions to the end. If your English language skills do not qualify you to start immediately, then you can still enrol in our IGCSE courses, that will entitle you to join our English language preparation courses from any English level that you have presently up to the Elementary level 3B  free of charge provided you have already enrolled in 5 International GCSE subjects.

Progression

The International GCSE in English ESL course will be of interest to those who wish to progress to A-level studies in English language or English language literature related subjects. Alternatively, together with another four IGCSEs subjects can qualify you to meet most of British university foundation year admission requirements
Another great advantage of English ESL is for student who wishes to meet the English language criteria for a university admission, IGCSE in English as a Second Language (ESL) is accepted by most of the British universities as proof of your English ability and can substitute other English admission requirements hence you can hit two birds with one stone by learning the IGCSE in ESL.

Examination Centres

It is known that everywhere in the word student studies full time at a school sits her/his exams in the same school, but due to the popularity and demand for the British qualifications many examination boards such as Pearson-Edexcel and Cambridge International have allowed private candidates such as distance learners to be able to sit for their exams from their country of residence without the need to come to the UK to take those exams, this was dealt with by appointing some organizations in each country chosen by the examination boards (Pearson-Edexcel or Cambridge International) in order provide the exams location to the students. There are two options for distance learner where they can register and sit for their exams in their country of residence:

Option-1: Pearson-Edexcel Approved Exam Centres.

Option-2: British Council: Pearson-Edexcel and Cambridge work in a partnership with the British Council which allows students in many countries to be able to sit for their exams in the British Council as private candidates. Please remember to inform them that you are a “Private Candidate” and would like to register for Pearson-Edexcel or Cambridge exams and provide them with exam name and code.

What Your Course Fees Doesn’t Cover

Course fees do NOT include examinations or arrangement fees which required to sit for your formal exams and are paid for either the examination centre whether it is Pearson-Edexcel Examination Approved Centre or the British Council in your country of residence.
